The Parinari District is located in the Loreto Province in the Loreto Region in northeastern Peru . It was founded on February 7, 1866. The district has an area of 13,239 km². The 2017 census counted 6,383 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 7259, in 2007 it was 7292. The administrative center is the 107 m high village of Santa Rita de Castilla with 1341 inhabitants (as of 2017) on the north bank of the Río Marañón . Santa Rita de Castilla is located 90 km west of the provincial capital Nauta . Originally the district administration was in Parinari (Santa Cruz de Parinari). In the south of the district is the Pacaya-Samiria national nature reserve .
The district area is populated by the Cocama-Amahuaca tribe , which belongs to the Tupi-Guaraní language group.
Geographical location
The Parinari district is located in the Peruvian Amazon in the southwest of the Loreto province. The Río Marañón crosses the north of the district in an easterly direction. The Río Samiria , a right tributary of the Río Marañón, drains a large part of the area.
The Parinari district is bordered to the west by the Lagunas district ( Alto Amazonas province ), to the northwest by the Urarinas district , to the northeast by the Nauta district , to the extreme southeast by the Requena district ( Requena province ) and to the south by the Puinahua district (also in the province of Requena).
