Nauta is the capital of the Loreto Province in the Loreto region of northeast Peru . The city is also the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The city had 19,551 inhabitants at the 2017 census, 10 years earlier the population was 14,646.

The city of Nauta is located in the Peruvian Amazon lowland 93 km south-southwest of the regional capital Iquitos on the northern bank of the Río Marañón , 15 km above its junction with the Río Ucayali to the Amazon . The city has an important inland port. A road leads to Iquitos.
