The Loreto Province is located in the Loreto region in northern Peru . The province has an area of 67,434 km². At the 2017 census, 62,437 people lived in the province. Ten years earlier the population was 62,165. The administrative center is Nauta , located on the Río Marañón .
Geographical location
The province of Loreto is centrally located in the Loreto region in the Amazon lowlands . It extends along the Río Marañón between the confluences of Río Huallaga in the west and Río Ucayali in the east. The province has a maximum length in NNW-SSE direction of about 375 km and a width of 150 km. The north of the province is traversed by the Río Urituyacu (in the west) and Río Patayacu (in the east) in a southerly direction. The south is traversed by the Río Marañón in an easterly direction.
In the north, the Loreto province extends to the border with Ecuador . In the east the province borders on the province of Maynas , in the south on the province Requena and in the west on the provinces Alto Amazonas and Datem del Marañón .
Administrative division
The province of Loreto is divided into five districts. The district of Nauta is the seat of the provincial administration.
