The province of Putumayo is located in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The province, founded in 2014, has an area of ​​45,758 km². At the 2017 census, 7,780 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population of the area was 6463, in 2007 it was 9534. The administrative center is San Antonio del Estrecho .

Geographical location

The province of Putumayo is located in the far northeast of the Loreto region in the Amazon lowlands . The Río Putumayo flows along the northern provincial border, which also forms the state border with Colombia . The province has a maximum longitudinal extension of about 310 km and a width of 45 km. In the west, the province extends to the state border with Ecuador . In the southeast the province of Putumayo borders on the province of Maynas , in the southeast on the province of Mariscal Ramón Castilla .

Putumayo Province is divided into four districts. Putumayo district is the seat of the provincial administration.
