The Putumayo district is located in the Putumayo province in the Loreto region in the extreme northeast of Peru . The district was established on July 2, 1943. On May 5, 2014, the district was spun off from Maynas Province and added to the newly established Putumayo Province. The district has an area of ​​11,032 km². The district administration is located in the 106  m high provincial capital San Antonio del Estrecho with 3521 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Putumayo District is centrally located in the Putumayo Province. The Río Putumayo , border river to Colombia in the north , runs along the district and state border to the east. Its right tributary Río Algodón crosses the district in an easterly direction.

The district of Putumayo borders in the east on the district of Yaguas , in the southeast on the district of Pebas ( province of Mariscal Ramón Castilla ), in the south and in the southwest on the districts of Las Amazonas , Mazán and Napo (all three in the province of Maynas), in the north-west the district of Rosa Panduro and in the north of Colombia.
