The Mazán District is a district in the Maynas Province of the Loreto Region in northeastern Peru . The district founded on July 2, 1943 has an area of ​​9,922.45 km². At the 2017 census, there were 12,181 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 11,468, in 2007 13,098. The administrative center is the small town of Mazán with 4590 inhabitants (as of 2017). Mazán is located 30 km northeast of the city of Iquitos on the right bank of the Río Napo at the confluence of the Río Mazán at an altitude of 108  m .

Geographical location

Mazán District is centrally located in Maynas Province. It has a longitudinal extent in NW-SE direction of about 240 km. The district includes the catchment area of the Río Mazán and a section of the Río Napo not far from its confluence with the Amazon . The district is located in the northwest of the Amazon basin and is mostly covered with rainforest.

The district is bordered to the west and southwest by the Alto Nanay district , to the south by the Punchana district , to the southeast by the Indiana district , to the east by the Las Amazonas district , to the northeast by the Putumayo district ( Putumayo province ) and to the north by the Napo District .
