The Fernando Lores District is a district in the Maynas Province of the Loreto Region in northeastern Peru . The district was founded on June 8, 1936. It was named after Fernando Lores Tenazoa (1906-1933), a Peruvian military and national hero in the Colombian-Peruvian war .

The district has an area of ​​4568 km². At the 2017 census, 14,957 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 16,596, in 2007 19,127. The administrative center is the small town of Tamshiyacu, 108  m high on the right bank of the Amazon , with a population of 6,535 (as of 2017). Tamshiyacu is located 30 km south-southeast of the provincial and regional capital Iquitos .

Geographical location

The Fernando Lores district is located in the Peruvian Amazon in the extreme south of Maynas Province. It extends along the Amazon, mostly on the right eastern bank. The longitudinal extension in north-south direction is 100 km, the maximum width 75 km. In the north, the rainforest has been partially cleared.

The Fernando Lores district borders in the southwest on the Saquena district ( Requena province ), in the west on the Nauta ( Loreto province ) and San Juan Bautista districts , in the northwest on the Belén district , in the northeast on the Indiana district and in the southeast on the district Yavarí ( Mariscal Ramón Castilla Province ).
