The Yavarí district is located in the Mariscal Ramón Castilla province of the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was established on July 2, 1943. It has an area of 14,360 km². The 2017 census counted 9,928 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 4624, in 2007 it was 10,225. The administrative seat is the small town Islandia with 1939 inhabitants (as of 2017). The 70 m high city is located on the south bank of the Río Yavarí just 5 km above its mouth in the Amazon . Islandia is located on the Brazilian border 70 km southeast of the provincial capital Caballococha . The Brazilian border town of Benjamin Constant is 3.5 km southeast of Islandia.
Geographical location
The Yavarí district is located in the Peruvian Amazon in the south of the Mariscal Ramón Castilla province. The district extends along the Peruvian-Brazilian border river Río Yavarí over a length of about 350 km. In the southwest it includes the catchment area of the left tributary Río Yavarí Mirín . In the extreme northeast, the district extends to the Amazon. The area consists mainly of rainforest. Isla Santa Rosa, a river island in the Amazon, is located at the Tres Fronteras triangle . On the opposite bank of the river are the cities of Leticia in Colombia and Tabatinga in Brazil.
The district of Yavarí is bordered to the southwest by the districts of Yaquerana and Saquena (both in the province of Requena ), to the northwest by the districts of Fernando Lores , Indiana and Las Amazonas (all three in the province of Maynas ) and to the north by the districts of Pebas , San Pablo and Ramón Castilla . The Yavarí district borders Colombia in the extreme northeast and Brazil in the southeast.
