Benjamin Constant , officially Município de Benjamin Constant , is a small town in the state of Amazonas ( Brazil ). In 2010, 33,411 people lived in what is now 8,695 km² (2017). It is 1118 km from the capital Manaus .
The municipality was established on January 29, 1898 by the law Lei Estadual nº 191 . The city is named after the Brazilian military, politician and engineer Benjamin Constant Botelho de Magalhães (1836-1891).
It is located at the confluence of the Rio Javari in the Amazon on the border with Peru . The surrounding cities are Tabatinga , São Paulo de Olivença , Ipixuna , Eirunepé , Jutaí and Atalaia do Norte as well as Islandia on the Peruvian side .
There are no customs and immigration facilities in the city, such formalities take place in Tabatinga on the opposite side of the Amazon. Benjamin Constant is connected to Atalaia do Norte by road, but otherwise only accessible by boat (31 hours or 7 days with slow boats from Manaus ). The Tabatinga Airport is 17.8 km away and is reached in two hours by boat.
The region is a traditional settlement area of the Ticuna . In Benjamin Constant is the Museu Maguta , an indigenous ethnographic museum about this people.
