Atalaia do Norte , officially Município de Atalaia do Norte , is the westernmost Brazilian municipality in the state of Amazonas in the northern region . With 19,921 inhabitants (2019 estimate) and an area of 76,435 km² (2019), it is the third largest municipality in the Amazon and the seventh largest in Brazil. It is located on the Rio Javari , the municipality borders, following the river upwards to the west, to Peru .
General
It only has an extremely low population density and consists mainly of primeval forest, the Amazon rainforest . In the area of this community is the indigenous reserve Terra Indígena Vale do Javari , which is still inhabited by isolated Indians, indigenous ethnic groups who have had little or no contact with modernity and hunt with bow and arrow.
Internationally, the place made international headlines when, on August 13, 1930, a meteorite impact similar to the Tunguska event was recorded in the area of the Rio Curuçá , which became known as the Curuçá event .
Originally known as Remate de Males, it became the Distrito de Remate de Males and was subordinate to the Benjamin Constant community . On December 19, 1955, the place received city rights, was spun off from Benjamin Constant and was now responsible for a large area of the Amazon forest itself. Benjamin Constant is the closest town to the east and can be reached via the BR-307 road through the jungle . There is large deforestation along the road and south of the village. The Rio Javari connects the place with the outside world by water.
The human development index is very low for Brazil at 0.450 (2010), comparable to some African developing countries.
