The Indiana District is located in the Maynas Province in the Loreto Region in northeastern Peru . The district was established on December 21, 1943. The district has an area of ​​3366 km². At the 2017 census, there were 11,648 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 13,508, in 2007 it was 12,198. The administrative seat is the city ​​of Indiana, 105  m high on the left bank of the Amazon , with 4400 inhabitants (as of 2017). Indiana is 35 km northeast of the provincial and regional capital of Iquitos .

Geographical location

The Indiana district is located in the Peruvian Amazon in the central southeast of Maynas Province. It has a maximum longitudinal extent in north-south direction of about 115 km and a maximum width of 47 km. The Amazon traverses the far north of the district in an easterly direction. The catchment area of the Río Maniti, a right tributary of the Amazon, forms a large part of the district.

The Indiana district borders in the southwest on the Fernando Lores district , in the northwest on the Belén and Punchana districts , in the north on the Mazán district , in the east on the Las Amazonas district and in the extreme south on the Yavarí district .
