The Ramón Castilla district is located in the Mariscal Ramón Castilla province of the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district, founded on February 7, 1866, was named after Ramón Castilla (1797-1867), a Peruvian military and four-time president.
The district has an area of 6,853 km². The 2017 census counted 22,356 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 15,686, in 2007 18,783. The administrative center is the provincial capital Caballococha, 84 m high on the south bank of the Amazon , with 10,097 inhabitants (as of 2017).
The indigenous peoples Ticuna and Peba-Yagua live in the district area .
Geographical location
The Ramón Castilla district is located in the Peruvian Amazon in the northeast of the Mariscal Ramón Castilla province. The Amazon traverses the district in an easterly direction. The Río Atacuari drains the north of the district. The area consists mainly of rainforest.
Ramón Castilla district is bordered to the south by the district Yavarí , the west by the district of San Pablo , on the north by the district Yaguas ( province of Putumayo ), and on the east by the Colombian Amazonas Department .
