Jack alone in serial madness ( reference title Des Wahnsinns fette Beute , original title: Delirious ) is a comedy film by the director Tom Mankiewicz from 1991.

action

Jack Gable works as the chief writer of a soap opera and is secretly in love with the leading actress Rachel Hedison. During a meeting with the producers, he is told that they are not only dissatisfied with his book for the coming season, but that they also want to skip the role of Laura Claybourne because they do not want to meet Rachel Hedison's excessive salary demands. Instead, a new actress for the role of Janet Dubois has been cast ; In addition, another screenwriter, Arnie Federman, was hired to make the necessary changes. When Jack is preparing for a trip to Vermont for the weekend , Laura, whom he adores, spontaneously joins him. She had just separated from her boyfriend Dennis, known as Dr. Paul Kirkwood also stars in the series. While Jack is loading the suitcases into the car, he is distracted by Dennis and Laura, who are kissing each other again, whereupon the trunk lid hits him on the head and he passes out.

When he comes to, he sets off for Vermont alone. Shortly after leaving town, he had a car accident in which he lost consciousness again. He wakes up in Ashford Falls Hospital, the fictional location of his own soap opera. At first he thinks the film team is playing a trick on him. However, he quickly realizes that he is not in a film set , but in a real city. He convinces his attending physician, Dr. Kirkwood to discharge him and leaves the hospital where he runs into Janet DuBois. She thinks he is the businessman Jack Gates, who wants to buy her late father's invention, a weight loss pill .

Jack quickly realizes that he can use his typewriter to influence how things work in Ashford Falls by incorporating his wishes into the script. First, he makes sure that his damaged car is repaired. Next, he prevents the death of the previous leading actress Rachel, written by his author rival Federman. However, all of his efforts to win Rachel over fail; this continues to give him the cold shoulder. Instead, his relationship deepens with Janet DuBios, who is pressured by the Hedison family of industrialists who target her father's secret formula. When the real Jack Gates suddenly appears, Jack Gable sends him on a business trip to Cleveland by means of a script change .

The more Jack tries to win Rachel's heart, the more his paths cross with Janet until Jack accidentally wrecks his typewriter. In the meantime it turns out that Rachel and Janet were exchanged at birth, and that Janet is the true daughter of the factory owner Hedison. His son Blake was meanwhile at the instigation of the scheming Rachel by Dr. Kirkwood drugged and shot Janet. Injured, she is taken to the hospital for an operation. This is done by Dr. Kirkwood, instigated by Rachel to kill Janet in the operation. Jack tries to forestall this and works feverishly to fix his typewriter. However, he is caught by Jack Gates, who returned from Cleveland and shoots him with a shotgun, ultimately destroying the typewriter.

Jack wakes up in the sets of his soap opera, where actors Laura and Dennis took care of him after he passed out from the trunk lid. He realizes that his Ashford Falls experience was only a fantasy, but it changed his mind about the script and the actors. First, he reveals to Laura that she will lose her role; then he seeks a conversation with the producers, with whom he asserts his ideas for the next season. Finally, he meets Louise and becomes aware of his feelings for her.
