Thomas Frank Mankiewicz (born June 1, 1942 in Los Angeles , California , † July 31, 2010 there ) was an American screenwriter and director .

biography

Tom Mankiewicz was the son of film director Joseph L. Mankiewicz and actress Rose Stradner . His uncle Herman J. Mankiewicz wrote the screenplay for Citizen Kane (1941).

Tom Mankiewicz grew up in Beverly Hills and New York. He graduated from Exeter Academy and Yale University . Thanks to his family connections, Mankiewicz made connections in the film business early on. He often spent the summer months on the sets of the films his father was working on. He began his career in the film business in 1961 as a production assistant on the film The Comancheros with John Wayne . From 1966 he wrote scripts.

Mankiewicz wrote the book for on the film Georgy Girl -based musical Georgy . The performance of the musical in 1970 brought Mankiewicz's attention to David Picker of United Artists. At the time, he was looking for an author with Albert R. Broccoli to rewrite the script for Diamond Fever . Since Diamond Fever was supposed to be set in Las Vegas, Broccoli wanted a young American writer. Mankiewicz was offered a contract, which ultimately led to his longstanding work on the James Bond film series . At Diamantenfieber Mankiewicz was named as a screenwriter together with the original writer Richard Maibaum . Mankiewicz wrote the book about the next Bond, Live and Let Die alone, before working on the script again with Maibaum for The Man with the Golden Gun . He wrote an early draft for The Spy Who Loved Me without being named in the credits. His last work on a James Bond film was for Moonraker when he drafted a possible framework story.

In addition to his work for the James Bond films, Mankiewicz revised the scripts for Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980), but was only mentioned in the opening credits as an artistic advisor.

He made his debut as a film director in 1987 with the film Schlappe Bullen Don't Bite , before he staged a few episodes of the series Hart but cordially .

In May 2012, the autobiography My Life as a Mankiewicz: An Insider's Journey through Hollywood was published , which was created in collaboration with Robert Crane.
