Rose Stradner

Rosa Louise Marie Stradner (born July 31, 1913 in Vienna , † September 27, 1958 in Mount Kisco , New York ) was an Austrian actress .

life and work

She attended the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in her hometown and was engaged at the Zurich City Theater in 1929 . In 1931 she played in Brno, from 1932 to 1934 she was part of the ensemble of the German People's Theater in Vienna. From 1935 to 1937 she worked at the Theater in der Josefstadt , where she appeared in the title role in the Sissy Singspiel until 1936 . Through her first husband, the director Karl Heinz Martin , she came to film in 1933, where she received significant roles throughout.

In November 1935 she had already played in the play Love is Not So Simple Theater in New York , and in 1937, encouraged by MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer , she settled permanently in New York. At the side of Edward G. Robinson she acted in her first American production The Last Gangster as the bride of a gang boss.

On July 31, 1939, she married the film producer Joseph L. Mankiewicz . She became the mother of two sons, Christopher and Tom . Rose Stradner received no film roles in her later years, suffered from alcohol problems and took her own life with an overdose of sleeping pills.
