The Teniente Manuel Clavero district is located in the Putumayo province in the Loreto region in the extreme northeast of Peru . The district was established on October 19, 2004. On May 5, 2014, the district was spun off from Maynas Province and added to the newly established Putumayo Province. The district was named after Manuel Clavero Muga (1879-1911), a Peruvian officer in the Colombian-Peruvian War . The district area is 9642 km². The 2017 census counted 2818 inhabitants. In 1007 the population was 3896. The district administration is located in the 181  m high village of Soplín Vargas with 657 inhabitants (as of 2017). Soplín Vargas is located 320 km northwest of the provincial capital San Antonio del Estrecho .

Geographical location

The Teniente Manuel Clavero district is located in the far west of the Putumayo province. The Río Putumayo , border river to the north and east of Colombia , runs along the district and state border to the southeast. Its right tributaries Río Curuya, Río Angusilla and Río Yuvineto cross the district in an easterly direction. In the extreme northeast, the Río Güepí , the right tributary of the Río Putumayo, forms the border with Ecuador .

The Teniente Manuel Clavero district borders the Rosa Panduro district in the south, the Torres Causana district ( Maynas province ) in the southwest, Ecuador in the west and Colombia in the north and east.
