The Lagunas district is located in the Alto Amazonas province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . It was founded on January 2, 1857. The district has an area of ​​6144 km². The 2017 census counted 13,420 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 11,693, in 2007 13,270. The administrative seat is in the small town of Lagunas at an altitude of 149  m with 7757 inhabitants (as of 2017). Lagunas is located on the right bank of the Río Huallaga , 42 km above its confluence with the Río Marañón , just under 90 km north-northeast of the provincial capital of Yurimaguas .

Geographical location

The Lagunas district is located in the Peruvian Amazon region in the north of the Alto Amazonas province. The southern part of the district extends along the lower reaches of the Río Huallaga. The northern part comprises the catchment area of the Río Nucuray north of the Río Marañón.

The Lagunas district is bordered to the south by the Santa Cruz district , to the west by the Jeberos and Pastaza districts , to the extreme northwest by the Andoas district ( Datem del Marañón province ), to the northeast by the Urarinas district and to the southeast by the Parinari district (the last two in the province of Loreto ).
