Lagunas is the capital of the Lagunas district in the Alto Amazonas province of the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . Lagunas is located in the Amazon lowlands at an altitude of 123  m on the right bank of the Río Huallaga , almost 50 km above its confluence with the Río Marañón . The small town had 7,215 inhabitants in the 2017 census. 10 years earlier the population was 7396. To the east of the city is the Pacaya-Samiria nature reserve .
