The Pastaza district is located in the Datem del Marañón Province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was established on July 2, 1943. On August 1, 2005, the northeastern part of the district was carved out and has since formed the newly established district of Andoas .
The Pastaza district has an area of 9098 km². The 2017 census counted 6,097 inhabitants. In 2007 the population was 6137. The administrative center is the 120 m high on the left bank of the Río Rimachi, a western arm of the Río Pastaza , located Ullpayacu with 1894 inhabitants (as of 2017). Ullpayacu is located 20 km north-northwest of the provincial capital San Lorenzo . The area is populated by the Quechua Pastaza tribe.
Geographical location
The Pastaza district is located on the western edge of the Peruvian Amazon in the central north of the Datem del Marañón province. The district is traversed by the Río Pastaza in a southerly direction. The district extends in the south to its confluence with the Río Marañón . The Pastaza tributaries Río Chapuli and Río Chuinda drain the northwest of the district.
The Morona district borders in the southwest on the Barranca district , in the northwest on the Morona district , in the northeast on the Andoas district, in the east on the Lagunas district and in the extreme southeast on the Jeberos district .
