The Morona district is located in the Datem del Marañón Province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was established on July 2, 1943. It has an area of 11,046 km². The 2017 census counted 4835 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1051, in 2007 it was 6356. The administrative center is the 130 m high on the right bank of the Río Morona , Puerto Alegria with 997 inhabitants (as of 2017). Puerto Alegría is 90 km northwest of the provincial capital San Lorenzo . The area is inhabited by the Chayahuita tribe.
Geographical location
The Morona district is located on the western edge of the Peruvian Amazon in the northwest of the Datem del Marañón province. The district includes the Peruvian part of the catchment area of the Río Morona and extends in the south to its confluence with the Río Marañón . A ridge of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera runs along the northwestern district border .
The Morona district is bordered on the southwest by the district Manseriche , the west by the district of Río Santiago ( province of Condorcanqui ), on the north by Ecuador , in the northeast on the district Andoas , on the east by the district Pastaza and the southeast and the south by the district Barranca .
