The Río Morona is a 455 km long left tributary of the Río Marañón in Ecuador and Peru . Including the source rivers Río Cangaime and Río Macuma , the total length is 785 km.

River course

The Río Morona arises 4 km west of Puerto Morona at the foot of a sub-Andean mountain range at the confluence of the Río Mangosiza and Río Cangaime. It flows in a south-southeast direction along the western edge of the Amazon basin . At river kilometer 442 the trunk road E40 ( Santiago de Méndez - Puerto Morona) crosses the river. This crosses the border to Peru at river kilometer 435 and then flows through the province of Datem del Marañón . It shows a strongly meandering behavior with numerous river bends and oxbow lakes . The Río Morona finally flows into the Río Marañón, 116 km below the breakthrough valley Pongo de Manseriche and 558 km above its junction with the Río Ucayali to the Amazon .

Catchment area and hydrology

The Río Morona drains an area of ​​around 17,750 km². Of this, 6720 km² are in Ecuador, 2720 km² within Ecuador are at altitudes over 500  m . The catchment area extends up to 3.5 kilometers to the Río Pastaza in the north . In the west, the catchment area borders on that of the Río Upano and that of the Río Santiago . The mean discharge is 1050 m³ / s.

Fish fauna

The three-banded armored catfish belongs to the fish fauna of the Río Morona .
