Volkmar Geupel (born February 13, 1940 in Dresden ) is a German prehistoric historian .

Life

Geupel grew up in Hellerau . As a teenager, he supported Gerhard Billig's excavations on the deserted Vorwerk Knapsdorf and in the Wilschdorf district . After studying prehistory at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1959 to 1963 , Geupel became an assistant at the State Museum for Prehistory in Dresden in 1967 . Initially, he was responsible for the preservation of monuments in the areas of Freital , Dippoldiswalde , Freiberg and Marienberg . Initially, his main focus was on Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites and finds in Saxony.

His work focus switched to the settlement history of the central Ore Mountains , and he carried out numerous excavations at mansions and castles in the Ore Mountains. At some of these facilities, through targeted archaeological investigations, he was able to record their importance for the first time (e.g. Nidberg Castle ) or to re-evaluate their significance and document their characteristics. According to Yves Hoffmann , it is thanks to Geupel's work that the area is the "archaeologically best-researched low mountain range in Central Germany ". In 2013 he summarized his numerous publications on the subject in a guide to the castles and fortified churches in the Ore Mountains District.

In 1970 Geupel was appointed district floor conservationist for the Karl-Marx-Stadt district . From 1983 he headed the Department of Ground Monument Preservation at the State Museum of Prehistory. After the reunification , Geupel was head of the department for the administrative region of Chemnitz in the Saxon State Office for Archeology . He retired in 2005, but continues to publish his research results and head archaeological excursions in his research area.
