Gerhard Billig (born May 20, 1927 in Dresden ; † April 24, 2019 ibid) was a German prehistoric archaeologist and medievalist .

Life

Gerhard Cheap attended elementary and high school. The school attendance was interrupted from 1944 to 1946 by his service as an air force helper , in the Reich Labor Service , as a war participant and by British captivity. In December 1946 cheap took his Abitur and then took a course to become a new teacher . As such he worked from 1947 and joined the SED in the same year . A year later, Billig began studying pedagogy , folklore , German and prehistory at the Dresden University of Technology . He went to the University of Leipzig in 1950 and passed the state examination there in 1951 . In the same year he became a teacher, but continued his studies as an external student.

From 1952, Billig worked as a research assistant for prehistory and early history at the Vogtland District Museum in Plauen . In 1954 he moved to the State Museum for Prehistory in Dresden as a research assistant . In October 1956, Billig received his doctorate with the work Die Aunjetitzer Kultur in Sachsen in Dresden. Reviewers were Friedrich Behn and Gerhard Mildenberger . In 1960 he became a research assistant and in 1964 curator at the State Museum for Prehistory in Halle . From 1966 he was a research assistant at the chair for history of the Pädagogische Hochschule Dresden (PHD), from 1972 lecturer. In December 1986 the doctorate B took place with Friedrich Schlette , Joachim Herrmann and Hans Walther ; The subject of the four-volume habilitation thesis was studies on the castle and feudal society in the Upper Saxon-Meissnian area. Archaeological-archival comparative studies. In 1987 he became an associate professor at the PHD. He was newly appointed in 1991 and retired the following year.
