geography

location

The district of Dippoldiswalde belonged to the district of Dresden and was located south of the district capital Dresden in the Eastern Ore Mountains .

Neighboring areas

The district of Dippoldiswalde bordered in a clockwise direction to the west, beginning with the districts of Brand-Erbisdorf , Freiberg , Freital and Pirna . In the south it bordered on Czechoslovakia .

Natural space

The former district of Dippoldiswalde is shaped by the plateau valley relief of the eastern Ore Mountains. The extensive plateaus at heights between 300 and 800 m above sea level. (often arable land and pastures) are broken through by wooded valleys of the rivers Bobritzsch , Wilde Weißeritz , Rote Weißeritz , Müglitz (river), which drain to the north . The landmarks Wilisch (476 m), Luchberg (576 m) and Geisingberg (824 m) form important, mostly basaltic peaks . The highest peak of the eastern Ore Mountains is the less prominent Kahleberg (905 m) near Zinnwald-Georgenfeld near the German-Czech border. There are also larger forest areas such as the Dippoldiswalder Heide , the Hirschbacher Heide and the Schmiedeberg-Oberfrauendorfer Forest. Also noteworthy are the Georgenfeld high moor near Zinnwald and the geologically interesting Karsdorf Fault . The Lehnmühle and Klingenberg reservoirs, which are important for the production of drinking water in Dresden, as well as the Malter reservoir, were also wholly or mostly in the Dippoldiswalde district.

The remains of the tin - mining are especially to see Altenberg. There is a ping in Altenberg.

economy

After the formerly important mining industry had almost completely come to a standstill in the 19th century, the Eastern Ore Mountains remained untouched by the development of today's highly industrialized Saxon region. Tin was only mined in Altenberg. Watchmaking, precision engineering and computing electronics were important branches of production in Glashütte; In Dippoldiswalde, hydraulic systems, watch parts and packaging were manufactured, and there was also wood processing and food production in the district. The main focus of collective agriculture was cattle breeding and dairy farming. The unemployment trend in the district was relatively favorable despite the supposed structural weakness. Tourism was an important industry. The southern district was one of the most important holiday areas in the GDR. The health resorts of Behrenfels, Bährenburg, Kipsdorf and the tourist resorts of Schellerhau, Rehefeld and Zinnwald were particularly well known.

traffic

The Dippoldiswalde district was opened up by two long-distance roads , today's federal roads 170 and 171 . The normal-gauge railway line Heidenau – Kurort Altenberg (“Müglitztalbahn”) and the narrow-gauge Weißeritztalbahn from Freital-Hainsberg via Dippoldiswalde and Schmiedeberg to Kurort Kipsdorf opened up the Dippoldiswalde district on the rail side for both passenger and freight traffic. Otherwise, the district was rather aloof from the major road and rail routes.
