Kipsdorf is a district of the city of Altenberg in Saxony , in the Eastern Ore Mountains on the B 170 between Dresden and Prague , 15 km from the Czech border.
geography
The place is in the Eastern Ore Mountains , directly on the B 170 . Kipsdorf is the terminus of the Weißeritztalbahn Freital-Hainsberg - Kipsdorf, a narrow-gauge railway . The floods in 2002 destroyed large parts of the railway. The construction was slow. The section from Freital-Hainsberg to Dippoldiswalde has been in operation again since December 13, 2008 . The remainder of the route from Dippoldiswalde to Kipsdorf has been accessible again since 2017.
history
In 1510 the place was founded by settlers in the service of the Lords of Bärenstein and later came to the Altenberg office . Originally the place was called "Kyppsdorf" (copper village). The name referred to the nearby copper mining industry. In 1883 the narrow-gauge railway was extended from Schmiedeberg to Kipsdorf. In 1884 there were two restaurants in the village. The Kipsdorf mountain church was inaugurated in 1908 . Due to the railway connection, tourism developed rapidly, so that in 1910 already 10,000 holidaymakers visited the place.
On April 1, 1996, the place was incorporated into the municipality of Altenberg. A big problem is the emigration of numerous residents, only about 300 live there.
The damage caused by the floods in 2002 has been almost completely repaired after seven years. The Kipsdorf terminus station building was completely renovated and expanded as a community center. It is used as a meeting place and for association work with events and leisure activities.
The operational interruption of the Weißeritztalbahn due to the flooding reduced the tourist attraction of the place.
