On June 29, 1541, bailiff Werner von Nassau bought "a number of desolate rooms" and built an outbuilding in the Altenberg district that belonged to Bärenstein Castle . The building was erected on the site of the former Hirschsprung Forestry Office. Werner von Nassau invested considerable funds and made it possible for the Vorwerk to be elevated to a manor in 1549 . The manor belonged to land on which further houses and two mills, the Mahlmühle Ladenmühle (mentioned in 1585) and in 1589 the cutting mill Brettmühle (on the site of today's sawmill) were built.

In an Altenberger record from 1589, the area is called "zum Hirschbrun". In 1747 Meissner referred to the place as "Hirschbrunn" and also as "Hirschsprung". The place name was reinterpreted and originally referred to the Hirschquelle. In 1793 the first house was built next to the manor . Other houses followed in the 19th century. According to Meissner, around 1600 the location comprised 32 pits and 3 tunnels. In 1620 two more mills were built on the front Biela, the manor thus comprised 3 board mills.

In 1839 the last owner of the manor, Johann Friedrich Klingsohr, had to file for bankruptcy as no new buyer could be found. The Royal Saxon State bought the property and, after some renovations, set up the forestry office there in 1840. In order to represent the predominantly agricultural and forestry interests and to promote the cooperation in the church and school community with Altenberg, the community of Hirschsprung was founded on April 15, 1839 .

Hirschsprung was incorporated into Altenberg on January 1, 1965 .

Hirschsprung consists of two settlement areas that are about 500 m apart. They are connected by the old Dresdner Straße, which was built in 1491 to connect Altenberg and Dresden . The upper part of the village lies in the valley of the Hirschsprunger Bach at 645 to 685 m above sea level. There is the Klengelpark in memory of the local historian Arthur Klengel. In the immediate vicinity, in the flat valley of the Kleine Biela, there are some small farms. The lower village with the Gasthof Ladenmühle on the road to the bobsleigh run has a sawmill with a historic gate from 1907 is about 600 to 620 m above sea level.

During the GDR era, Hirschsprung developed into a popular local recreation and holiday destination. In addition to numerous private holiday apartments and the Haus Charlotte guest house, there were a number of holiday properties from various state- owned companies and combines in the GDR:

Both the Buschhaus and the Ladenmühle operated public restaurants. With the completion of the racing sledge and bobsleigh run , Hirschsprung became a popular place to stay for athletes from all over the world. With German reunification, some of the properties remained unused due to the closings. The Gasthaus Buschhaus continued to operate as a restaurant for a few years, was converted and today contains rental and holiday apartments. With the exception of the Ladenmühle hotel, all objects have been used for other purposes, are empty or have been demolished.
