history

Bärenfels was probably founded in 1503. The place got its name not from the bear , but from the owners of the Bärenstein estate to which the area belonged. Between 1546 and 1559, Hans von Bernstein was commissioned to unite places on the Weißeritz into a manor and to build a Bärenfels castle. In the Thirty Years War Bärenfels died out completely. Only in 1701 some people are said to have settled here again. Since 1791 Bärenfels belonged to the Altenberg office , from 1856 to 1875 to the Altenberg court office , and then to the Dippoldiswalde office . With the district reform in 1952 , Bärenfels became part of the Dippoldiswalde district . After the Saxon district reform in 1994 , Bärenfels was transferred to the Weißeritzkreis, which was formed from the district of Dippoldiswalde and the district of Freital . After more than 500 years of independence, Bärenfels was unintentionally incorporated into Altenberg on January 1st, 1999. From August 1, 2008, the Weißeritzkreis and the neighboring Saxon Switzerland district formed the new Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district .

Bärenfels' spellings also changed over time. The place was called "Bernfels" in 1556, "Behrenfels" in 1564 and "Berenfelß" in 1570. From 1784, today's spelling became common.

Bärenfels ran the additional health resort until after 1990 .
