S1000D

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The specification S1000D “International specification for technical publications utilizing a common source database” is an essential document for technical documentation in the fields of aviation and defense material worldwide . On the European side, the editors are the ASD (AeroSpace and Defense Industries Association of Europe, Brussels) as the successor organization to the AECMA , on the US side the AIA (Aerospace Industries of America) and the ATA (Air Transport Association of America, Inc).

This is a specification for the creation and procurement of technical documentation. S1000D is based on international standards that define neutral data formats for electronic documentation. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) for text, the Computer Graphics Metafile Format (CGM) for 2D illustrations, and the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) for 3D animation are examples.

Availability

The S1000D specification in English can be downloaded free of charge from the international website.

Some outdated editions of the specification are also available for download in German.

Germany

Since the S1000D is an international specification, the Bundeswehr, together with the industry, has set up the Descriptive Technical Documentation Working Group (AK BTD) to identify national needs and interests and to pass them on to the international S1000D committee in the form of amendments. The aim is to further develop and interpret the specification in favor of national requirements and applications.

software

In practice, individual S1000D components (data modules, images, etc.) are difficult to read as raw data because they are intended as an exchange format. That is why S1000D editors and users use different software to create, edit and display S1000D content. Some of the most used applications are listed here:
