The administrative district of Dresden was one of a total of three administrative districts within the Free State of Saxony . It was located in the east of the state and was built on January 1, 1991 by resolution of the Saxon state government of November 27, 1990. With over 1.6 million inhabitants, it was the largest administrative district in the Free State of Saxony.
As early as the middle of the 19th century, there were state middle authorities in the Kingdom of Saxony, which at the time were called "district chiefs " and which have changed their borders several times in the course of history. The administrative district of Dresden goes back to the district main team Bautzen and the district main team Dresden , which were only merged in 1932 to form the district main team Dresden-Bautzen . In the Third Reich these were renamed into administrative districts (administrative district Dresden-Bautzen) . After the Second World War , administrative districts should initially be established again, but this intention was abandoned in 1947.
After the dissolution of the states in the GDR , state districts were set up in 1952 , but their function can hardly be compared with today's administrative districts. Only with the re-establishment of the state of Saxony in 1990 was the basis for the formation of new government districts created. On January 1, 1991, the Dresden Regional Council began its work.
Since then, the administrative district of Dresden has largely covered the area of the Dresden district . In addition, the then circles came Hoyerswerda and Weißwasser the district Cottbus after a plebiscite in the districts showed that the majority of the inhabitants wanted to Saxony.
On January 1, 2008, the administrative district consisted of three independent cities and 201 municipalities in eight rural districts. The regional council was in the course of district reform Saxony in 2008 to Landesdirektion converted.
