The administrative district Dessau existed from 1945 to 1947, in the Soviet occupation zone , and from 1990 to 2003 as one of three administrative districts of Saxony-Anhalt . It was in the east of the country. On July 23, 1945, the provincial president ordered three district administrations to be set up, one named Dessau for the former Free State of Anhalt , one in Magdeburg for the former Prussian province of the same name and one in Merseburg for the former Prussian province of Halle-Merseburg . The state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt decided on January 29, 1947 to dissolve the administrative districts, which then happened by June 30 of that year.

In the course of the reestablishment of the federal states in the GDR in the process of dissolution in 1990, the Dessau administrative district was re-established in the northern part of the GDR district of Halle , which was dissolved in the process . In addition, the Magdeburg administrative district was re-established and the Halle administrative district newly established.

On January 1, 2004, the Dessau administrative district was dissolved again. The tasks of the previous regional council were taken over by the state administrative office set up for the entire state with its seat in Halle (Saale).
