About this picture

The administrative district of Chemnitz from 1991 to 2008, one of the three administrative districts within the Free State of Saxony . It was located in the southwest of the state and was built on January 1, 1991 by resolution of the Saxon state government on November 27, 1990.

history

Since 1835 there were higher state authorities in the Kingdom of Saxony, the district directorates. In 1874 it was renamed into the “district main teams ”, which changed their boundaries several times in the course of history. The Chemnitz District Main Team was created in 1900 through a division and spin-off from the Zwickau District Main Team. In the Third Reich , the district main teams were renamed administrative districts based on the Prussian model. After the Second World War , the countries in the GDR were smashed. The four traditional Saxon administrative districts of Leipzig, Dresden, Chemnitz and Zwickau were divided from 1952 by the SED government into the three GDR districts of Leipzig, Dresden and Karl-Marx-Stadt.

It was only with the re-establishment of the state of Saxony in 1990 that the basis for the formation of new government districts was created. The administrative district of Chemnitz largely comprised the area of the former Karl-Marx-Stadt district . In the course of the district reform of Saxony in 2008 , the administrative district of Chemnitz was renamed the Chemnitz administrative district , which was later merged into the one Saxony regional directorate with its headquarters in Chemnitz.
