Thomas Gerlach (born March 26, 1952 in Dresden ) is a German writer and laudator as well as a surveyor and honorary monument conservator .

Live and act

Gerlach was born in the garden city of Hellerau two years after it was incorporated into Dresden , the son of the writer Hubert Gerlach . And his aunt Tine Schulze-Gerlach was also a member of the writing guild. Gerlach started writing as a young man.

As a trained surveyor , Gerlach , who lived in Niederlößnitz in Radebeul , Saxony , worked for the State Office for Archeology in Dresden after the fall of the Wall in the GDR . Even living in a listed winegrower's house , in 1993 he and like-minded people founded the voluntary association for monument maintenance and new building in Radebeul , which “has set itself the goal of maintaining this special character [of] the city [Radebeul] as a villa and To promote garden city, to meet the increasing pressure to build critically and to help avoid structurally damaging developments. “As long-time chairman of the association, he repeatedly got actively involved in the preservation of Radebeul monuments, but also according to the statutes of the association in the current new building activity. On the occasion of the public awarding of the Radebeul Builders' Prize , which was also created on his initiative , he repeatedly expressed both praise and critical thoughts. In addition, he was co-editor of the articles on urban culture in Radebeul , specifically dealing with some of the annual publications.

In addition to his activities to preserve the Hohenhaus as a monument , he has also committed himself to preserving the Radebeul tradition of commemorating Gerhart Hauptmann , who met his future wife Marie Thienemann at Hohenhaus. Literary evenings are held there together with the current owner of Hohenhaus. Every month, except in winter, there are also guided tours through Father Thienemann's now wooded garden, showing the lookout points created for the prematurely deceased mother, where the young Gerhart and his older brother Carl Hauptmann also worked.

Just as Gerlach has "an important part in the younger appearance of the Lößnitzstadt [...] Radebeul", he perpetuates it emphatically: sometimes more factually, but mostly with playful words.

Together with the architect and draftsman Thilo Hänsel, the writings In the footsteps of the Ziller brothers in Radebeul were created , an overview of numerous villas and country houses of the probably most influential Lößnitz builders, as well as The Lößnitzbachmühlen , a book about the seven watermills that formerly or even today standing by the local Lößnitzbach .

Also in common with Hansel created some works in which Gerlach's poetic texts are backed by sketches and drawings Hansel, such as the Elbigramme or high wind .

Like Hansel, “he accompanies the well-stocked Radebeul painters' guild not only as a laudator at vernissages ; With his poetry he also frames illustrated books by these painters. Just as he described Michael Hofmann's excellent woodcuts with subtle words ”, he found“ empathetic […] as well as subtle […] words ”that were collected in 2012 for many artist colleagues. "His poetry and prose thrive on idiosyncratic points of view and playing with 'verbatim'", right up to aphorism .

In 2009, ten years after the award of his aunt Tine Schulze-Gerlach, presented him with his hometown the art prize of the district town Radebeul as an author, art and cultural promoters, having already at the New Year reception of Radebeuler Mayor Bert Wendsche 2006 special for his "commitment für das Hohenhaus “was honored as a volunteer in the field of culture and education.
