The Río Upano is the 172 km long headwaters of the Río Namangoza in the Morona Santiago province in eastern Ecuador .

River course

The Río Upano has its source in the Cordillera Real at an altitude of about 4000  m , 25 km southwest of the Sangay volcano . It initially flows 50 km to the east. The top 40 km are within Sangay National Park . The trunk road E46 ( Guamote - Macas ) follows the course of the river up to river kilometer 125. The Río Upano then turns 30 km in the north-northeast direction. The two left tributaries Río Sangay and Río Volcán drain the southeast flank of the Sangay. The Río Upano turns from river km 100 10 km to the southeast and finally to the south. The E45 trunk road ( Puyo - Santigao de Méndez ) follows the course of the river from Macas. The Río Upano finally meets the Río Paute coming from the west near Patuca and unites with this to the Río Santiago. In addition to the provincial capital Macas, the small towns and villages Logroño , Zuñac , Huambi , Tayuza and Patuca lie on the river . Larger tributaries are u. a. Río Yukipa , Río Chiguaza and Río Pania from the left and Río Abanico , Río Jurumbaino , Río Tutanagosa and Río Yurupasa from the right.

Hydrology

The Río Upano drains a section on the eastern flank of the Cordillera Real. Its catchment area covers an area of ​​around 3700 km². The mean discharge at the gauge below the confluence of the Río Tutanagosa is 297.8 m³ / s.
