Macas , also Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Macas , is a city in southeast Ecuador and has about 30,000 inhabitants. The city was founded in 1575 by José Villanueva de Maldonado on behalf of the governor of Yaguarzongo , Juan Salinas Loyola. Macas has been the capital of the Morona Santiago province since 1929 .
The city lies on the western edge of the Amazon basin directly on the eastern slope of the Andes . About 50 kilometers to the northwest is the 5,230 m high Sangay volcano with the Sangay National Park surrounding it .

Directly on the western outskirts there is a regional airport with regular connections to Quito and Cuenca .
Macas is connected to Ambato in the central part of Ecuador via Puyo and Baños via a well-developed trunk road . Macadam roads also lead to Riobamba and Cuenca.
