Luis Macas
Luis Alberto Macas Ambuludí (born June 3, 1950 in Saraguro ) is an Ecuadorian politician and intellectual from the Kichwa-speaking ethnic group of the Saraguros .
Macas successfully studied anthropology, linguistics and law. He was one of the founders of the indigenous umbrella organization CONAIE and the Pachakutik party, as well as a member of the Ecuadorian parliament. Under Lucio Gutiérrez he became Minister of Agriculture in 2003, but he soon left the government together with Nina Pacari because of Gutiérrez's policies, which they perceived as neoliberal .
Macas was Chairman of CONAIE from 1990 to 1996 and from 2004 to 2008. On May 24, 2006, he was nominated by Pachakutik as a presidential candidate for the October 2006 election . In the first ballot, however, he only received a little more than 2 percent of the vote and therefore did not move into the second ballot.
