The Río Paute is the 110 km long right source river of the Río Namangoza in the provinces of Azuay , Cañar and Morona Santiago in the east of Ecuador .

River course

The Río Paute arises at an altitude of about 2200  m at the confluence of the Río Cuenca (left) and Río Santa Bárbara (right) 3 km north of the city of Gualaceo . It initially flows 50 km in a predominantly north-northeast direction. After about 10 kilometers he passes the small town of Paute on the left bank of the river . At river kilometer 65 the Río Paute is dammed by the Paute-Mazar dam over a length of 20 km. At river kilometer 51 there is the Amaluza dam , which dams the river for about 4.5 km. The Río Paute then cuts in a predominantly east-southeast direction through the ridge of the Cordillera Real . The E40 trunk road follows the course of the river. 9 km above the junction with the Río Upano to the Río Namangoza is the small town of Santiago de Méndez on the left bank of the river. 4 kilometers downstream, the Río Negro meets the Río Paute from the right. Below the junction, the E45 ( Zamora - Macas ) road crosses the river.

Hydrology

The Río Paute drains an area of 6439 km². The mean discharge at the gauge above the confluence of the Río Dudas is 71 m³ / s.

Use of hydropower

On the course of the Río Paute there are two dams, Paute Mazar and Amaluza , as well as three hydropower plants, Paute Mazar (194 MW), Paute Molino (1110 MW) and Paute Sopladora (487 MW).
