The Amaluza dam , also known as the Daniel Palacios dam or the Paute dam , supplies the largest hydroelectric power plant in Ecuador with water. The Spanish names of the dam are Embalse Amaluza (“Amaluza Reservoir”) and Represa de Paute (“Paute Reservoir”).

dam

The dam is located in the province of Azuay 55 km northeast of Cuenca , the capital of Azuay. The Río Paute , which flows over the Río Namangoza and the Río Santiago into the Amazon , is dammed . The reservoir has a capacity of 120 million cubic meters. The namesake Daniel Palacios is an engineer who planned the project.

The barrier structure is a 170 meter high curved concrete gravity dam in a narrow valley.

The storage space has been reduced to 90 million m³ due to sediments since the start of operations. As a result, and due to the increased demand for water, the water level drops sharply in the dry season.

Paute Molino hydroelectric power station

The Paute Molino ( ) hydroelectric power station is located about 12 km downstream on the left bank of the river. It was built in three phases. Phases A and B went into operation in 1983, phase C in 1991. The power station has 10 Pelton turbines with a total output of 1110 megawatts , with the figures 1030, 1075 and 1690 MW. An expansion to 1780 MW is planned. The annual energy production averages 4872 GWh. The power plant provides 60% of the country's electricity needs.

Paute Sopladora hydroelectric power station

The Paute Sopladora hydropower plant ( ) is located on the right bank of the Paute River, 7.5 km downstream from the Paute Molino hydropower plant. The Paute Sopladora hydropower plant is supplied directly with the water derived from the Paute Molino hydropower plant. The power plant has been in operation since December 2016. It has 3 Francis turbines with a total output of 487 MW. The average annual energy production is 2800 GWh.
