The Río Cuenca emerges in the northeast of the Cuenca agglomeration at the confluence of the Río Machángara (left) and Río Tomebamba (right). It initially flows 12 km to the northeast. The E35 trunk road runs south of the river. The Río Burgay flows from the north into the Río Cuenca. This then turns to the east. Now the E40 follows the river. Three kilometers north of the city of Gualaceo , the Río Cuenca joins the Río Santa Bárbara, which flows in from the south, to form the Río Paute. The Río Cuenca drains an area of around 2500 km². The catchment area extends over the high valley of Cuenca and the adjacent mountain ranges.
