Heinz Schwidtmann (born October 15, 1926 , † July 16, 2001 ) was a German sports educator and university professor .

Life

Schwidtmann grew up in the Berlin district of Oberschöneweide . As a teenager, at the age of 17, he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and then into the Navy of the Wehrmacht . During the Second World War he was a radio operator on a ship stationed in northern Norway and was taken prisoner by the British.

From September 1946 Schwidtmann worked as a primary school teacher in Leipzig . He passed exams as a sports and history teacher, graduated from the party college "Karl Marx" and became school director and school councilor. From 1958 he taught at the Institute for Pedagogy at the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig, where together with Paul Kunath and Günther Röblitz he built up the basics of sports education, for example as recorded in the book “About the education of socialist athletes”. In 1960 he completed his doctoral thesis at the DHfK (title: "The development of the scientific worldview of the schoolchildren - a necessary component of the upbringing and educational process in the ten-year polytechnic high school"). In a work published in 1962 Schwidtmann dealt with the "ideological upbringing and education of high school students". In 1965 his habilitation (title: “Socialist physical culture and educated nation: extended synopsis to attempt a theoretical foundation”) was accepted.

Schwiedtmann was rector of the DHfK from 1963 to 1965. In March 1963 he was accepted by the GDR Council of Ministers into a newly formed “State Commission for the Development of the Principles for the Design of the Unified Socialist Education System”. In 1969 he took up a position as a lecturer in sports education at the Leipzig Research Institute for Physical Culture and Sport and was appointed full professor a year later. He later became deputy director and dean of the institute. In his research work, Schwidtmann dealt, among other things, with aspects of the "educational and personality-building relevance of high-performance sport", a "socialist education in school sport", the "relationship between personality development and top sporting performance", questions of "collectivity and sporting activity in socialism", the Model effect of sports teachers and exercise leaders as well as philosophical problems of a theory of sports. He was the editor of the book "Personality Development and Communist Education in Competitive Sport in the GDR" published in 1981.

In 1974 Schwidtmann became chairman of the German Boxing Association of the GDR (DBV) and remained in office until 1989. On September 1, 1990, as part of the dissolution of the German University of Physical Culture, he was retired as professor, but in the following years he continued to publish articles in the GDR-related journal “Contributions to Sports History”, among others on sports education such as the article “Sports Education - Forgotten history? ”, In which he and Karsten Schumann dealt with a treatise by Ommo Grupes on the history of German sports education. Among other things, the handling of the legacy of sports education in the GDR is criticized and "prejudices and clichés about GDR sport as well as about sports science and its development" are criticized. On a political level, Schwidtmann became involved in the PDS after the fall of the Wall and was a member of the party's council of elders.
