Karsten Schumann

Karsten Schumann (* 1963 ) is a German sports scientist and university professor .

Life

Schumann played handball at the performance level and rose in 1982 with SG Dynamo Suhl-Mitte in the first division of the German Democratic Republic . Parallel to his sports career, he completed an apprenticeship as a vehicle fitter. Schumann had to end his  handball career in autumn 1984, who was doing his military service in Berlin and playing handball there, due to injury.

From 1985 to 1989 he studied sports science at the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig . He wrote his diploma thesis on “Selected goals and tasks of sports policy in Italy in the mid-1980s”. Schumann stayed at the DHfK on a research grant. In 1993 he completed his doctoral thesis, then already at the sports science faculty of the University of Leipzig , after the DHfK was dissolved with the end of the German Democratic Republic. The title of his dissertation was an empirical-theoretical study on the development-determining conditions of competitive sport in the GDR: An attempt to take stock of contemporary history and a critical assessment, especially from the perspective of the overall objective .

Schumann dealt extensively with the history of the German University of Physical Culture and was editor of the 2003 book DHfK Leipzig 1950-1990. Chronology of a world-famous sports university and the abrupt end of its history . In 2005, together with Ronny Garcia, he published the work Findings and Experiences from DHfK Trainers All Over the World, and in the same year the essay On the Training of Highly Qualified Ski Trainers in Distance Learning at University - A Review in which he dealt with distance learning trainer training at DHfK. Other topics of his work in sports science include the area of ​​"Theory and methodology of training", which he dealt with based on the findings of sports science in the GDR, "Sports and sports science in the social coordinates", "Aspects of the life sciences for top athletic performance" and the "development of training systems". In the journal Contributions to the History of Sports, Schumann took a critical look at West German sports science with regard to its approach to sports science in the GDR.

From April 1, 2006 until 2012, Schumann was assistant to sports director Matthias Sammer at the German Football Association (DFB) , and from summer 2012 to 2016 he was also an employee of sports director Sammer at FC Bayern Munich . In both activities, Schumann was involved in the development of strategies and concepts for long-term performance development. He was co-author of the DFB training concept “The long way to success” as well as the publication Elite Schools of Football, also published by the DFB . Guide to training .

He worked in the field of sports science as a speaker for competitive sports, including from the winter semester 2017/18 at the University of Applied Management in the football management course. In November 2018 he was appointed professor at the German University for Prevention and Health Management in Saarbrücken .
