Paul Kunath (born July 26, 1926 in Reichenbach ) is a German sports psychologist and university professor.

Life

Kunath, who did athletics and gymnastics, took part in World War II as a marine and was wounded. After the war, he studied general pedagogy and didactics at the Potsdam University of Education, where he obtained the pedagogical doctorate degree in 1957 (Diss .: The content and organization of the cooperation between school and home: examined at the Pestalozzi School in Pirna-Copitz. ). He built up the sports psychology department at the German University of Physical Culture in Leipzig and from 1961 headed the institute for sports psychology, and from 1968 he was a full professor for sports psychology. At the international level, Kunath campaigned for the establishment of sport psychological associations. In 1963 he was one of the founders of the World Federation of Sports Psychologists. He was also instrumental in founding the European Association for Sport Psychology FEPSAC and was president of the organization from 1983 to 1991. In 1991 Kunath retired and was honored with a commemorative publication by his colleagues from Germany. In 2001 he was made an honorary member by the Working Group for Sport Psychology in Germany .

One of his most important publications is the book "Sportpsychologie für alle". As part of his research, Kunath dealt with issues of leadership in sport, the influence of sporting activities on personal development, sport as a contribution to the formation of the socialist type of people and training and competition stress from a sport psychological point of view. In addition, he was intensively involved in training the next generation of sports scientists and supervised more than 160 doctoral students and 35 post-doctoral students. After his retirement he helped u. a. In 2002 she supervised Gustav Weder's dissertation at the University of Göttingen and worked a. a. with Günther Wonneberger , Wolfgang Buss and Arnd Krüger on the history of sports science in the GDR.
