The district of Cahuapanas is located in the province of Datem del Marañón in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was founded on February 7, 1866. The district name is derived from Cahuapana , an indigenous people group and language in the area.
The district has an area of 5086 km². The 2017 census counted 7,612 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 5081, in 2007 it was 6822. The administrative seat is the 168 m high on the right bank of the Río Cahuapanas , a town of Santa María de Cahuapanas with 962 inhabitants (2017). Santa María de Cahuapanas is located 70 km southwest of the provincial capital San Lorenzo . The area is inhabited by the Chayahuita tribe.
Geographical location
The district of Cahuapanas is located on the eastern flank of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera on the western edge of the Peruvian Amazon in the southeast of the province of Datem del Marañón. The district includes the catchment area of the Río Cahuapanas and extends in the north to its confluence with the Río Marañón .
The district of Cahuapanas borders in the west and in the north on the district Barranca , in the east on the districts Jeberos and Balsapuerto (both in the province Alto Amazonas ) and in the extreme southwest on the district Moyobamba ( province Moyobamba ).
