The Moyobamba District is located in the Moyobamba Province in the San Martín Region in central northern Peru . The district founded on January 2, 1857 has an area of ​​about 2700 km². The 2017 census counted 81,084 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 38,880, in 2007 65,048. The district administration is located in the 860  m high provincial capital Moyobamba with 52,465 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The Moyobamba district extends along the southern flank of a ridge in the far north of the Moyobamba province. It has a longitudinal extent in NW-SE direction of about 125 km. The Río Mayo flows along the southern district boundary in a south-easterly direction and drains the area.

The Moyobamba district borders in the extreme northwest on the district Yambrasbamba ( province Bongará ), in the north on the districts Barranca and Cahuapanas (both in the province Datem del Marañón ), in the east on the district Balsapuerto ( province Alto Amazonas ), in the southeast on the District Pinto Recodo ( province Lamas ), in the south to the districts Jepelacio , Calzada and Yantalo and in the southwest to the districts Posic , Yuracyacu , San Fernando , Awajún and Pardo Miguel (all five in the province of Rioja ).
