San Lorenzo is the capital of the Datem del Marañón province in the Loreto region in northern Peru . The city is also the administrative seat of the Barranca district . The city had 8,216 inhabitants at the 2017 census, 10 years earlier the population was 6,532.

The city of San Lorenzo is located at an altitude of 133  m in the Peruvian Amazon lowlands on the northern bank of the Río Marañón , 23 km above the confluence of the Río Pastaza . The city has an important inland port. Aeródromo San Lorenzo Airport ( ICAO : SPQM) is located in the northwest of the city.
