The Santa Cruz district is located in the Alto Amazonas province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was founded on February 7, 1866. It has an area of 1118 km². The 2017 census counted 4,174 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3604, in 2007 4094. The administrative seat is the 149 m high village of Santa Cruz with 904 inhabitants (as of 2017). Santa Cruz is about a kilometer from the eastern bank of the Río Huallaga , 50 km northeast of the provincial capital of Yurimagua .
Geographical location
The Santa Cruz district is located in the Peruvian Amazon region in the central east of the Alto Amazonas province. The Río Huallaga crosses the west of the district. The catchment areas of its right tributaries Río Shishinahua and Río Yuracyacu form a large part of the eastern district area.
The Santa Cruz district is bordered to the south by the district Yurimaguas , on the west by the district Jeberos , on the north by the district Lagunas , in the far east to the district Parinari ( province of Loreto ) and in the extreme southeast of the district Teniente César López Rojas .
