The Vargas Guerra District is located in the Ucayali Province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was founded on June 8, 1936. The district was named after Alfredo Vargas Guerra (1910-1933), a national hero in the Colombian-Peruvian war .

The district has an area of ​​1898 km². The 2017 census counted 7572 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 7,013, in 2007 it was 8,219. The district administration is located in the 130  m high town of Orellana with 6,324 inhabitants (as of 2017) on the west bank of the Río Ucayali . Orellana is located 50 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Contamana .

The area is populated by the indigenous people of the Shipibo-Conibo , who belong to the Pano language family .

Geographical location

The Vargas Guerra district is located in the Peruvian part of the Amazon basin in the central north of the Ucayali province. The district has a longitudinal extension in east-west direction of 90 km and a maximum width of 55 km. It extends in the far west to the Cordillera Azul . The Río Ucayali crosses the district in the middle in a northerly direction. The western part of the district extends over the catchment area of the Río Sarayaquillo, a left tributary of the Río Ucayali. The southern district border east of the Río Ucayali runs along the Cerro Canchahuaya ridge.

The Vargas Guerra district borders in the south on the districts Contamana , Pampa Hermosa and Inahuaya , in the north on the district Sarayacu and in the east on the district Maquía ( province Requena ).
