The Shunte district is located in the Tocache Province in the San Martín region of northern Peru . The district was established on December 6, 1984. It has an area of ​​1060 km². At the 2017 census, there were 1,328 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 1443, in 2007 it was 1163. The district administration is located in the village of Monte Cristo with 428 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of about 1200  m . Monte Cristo is located on the right bank of the Río Tocache , a left tributary of the Río Huallaga , 30 km southwest of the provincial capital Tocache .

Geographical location

The Shunte District is located in the southwest of the Tocache Province. The district lies on the east bank of the Río Huallaga. The district is located in the Eastern Cordillera . The Río Tocache drains the area to the east.

The Shunte district borders in the south on the district Cholón ( province Marañón ), in the southwest on the district Huacrachuco (province Marañón), in the west on the districts Tayabamba and Ongón (both in the province Pataz ), in the north on the district Pólvora and in the East to Tocache and Uchiza districts .
