The Uchiza district is located in the Tocache province in the San Martín region of northern Peru . The district was established on October 21, 1912. It has an area of 768 km². At the 2017 census, 21,285 inhabitants lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 25,374, in 2007 22,448. The district administration is located in the city of Uchiza at an altitude of 544 m with 7386 inhabitants (as of 2017). Uchiza is located on the left bank of the Río Chontayacu , a left tributary of the Río Huallaga , 30 km south of the provincial capital Tocache . On the border to the neighboring district of Tocache , the company Palmas del Espino SA grows large oil palms .
Geographical location
The Uchiza district is located in the central south of the Tocache Province. The Río Huallaga crosses the eastern part of the district in a north-northwest direction. In the west of the district rise the mountains of the Peruvian Central Cordillera , in the east those of the Eastern Cordillera . The Río Chontayacu drains the western part of the district.
The Uchiza district borders in the far west to the east by the district Shunte , on the north by the district Tocache , in the northeast on the district Alto Biavo ( Province Bella Vista ) in the southeast of the district Nuevo Progreso and the south by the district Cholon ( Province Marañón ).
Places in the district
In addition to the main town of Uchiza, there is the small town of Santa Lucía, located on the left bank of the Río Huallaga, with 3727 inhabitants.
