The Tocache district is located in the Tocache Province in the San Martín region of northern Peru . The district was established on May 7, 1940. It has an area of ​​1111 km². At the 2017 census, 29,810 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 28,487, in 2007 it was 26,973. The district administration is located in the provincial capital Tocache with 17,893 inhabitants at an altitude of 497  m . Tocache owns an airfield. The national road 5N from Tingo María in the south to Bellavista in the north crosses the district. In the south and north of the district, the Palmas del Espino SA company grows oil palms on a large scale .

Geographical location

The Tocache District is centrally located in the Tocache Province. The Río Huallaga crosses the eastern part of the district in a north-northwest direction. In the west of the district rise the mountains of the Peruvian Central Cordillera , in the east those of the Eastern Cordillera . The Río Tocache , a left tributary of the Río Huallaga, drains the west of the district.

The district Tocache bordered on the west by the district Shunte , in the northwest on the district Pólvora , in the northeast on the district Alto Biavo ( Province Bella Vista ) and in the southeast and south by the district Uchiza .
