The Río Chontayacu (alternative spelling: Río Chuntayaco ; in the lower reaches also Río Uchiza ) is a 107 km long left tributary of the Río Huallaga in central Peru in the provinces of Marañón ( Huánuco region ) and Tocache ( San Martín region ).

River course

The Río Chontayacu has its origin in a mountain lake about 3900  m high in the Peruvian Central Cordillera 11 km east-northeast of Huacrachuco . The Río Chontayacu initially flows 25 km to the southeast. It then takes in a larger tributary from the right and left. The Río Chontayacu flows through the districts of Cholón and Uchiza in an easterly direction. From river kilometer 82 the national road 12A follows the course of the river. The district administrative center of San Pedro de Chonta is located at river kilometer 78 above the left bank of the river. At river kilometer 25, the Río Crisnejas meets the Río Chontayacu from the left. The river then crosses the south of the Tocache province. At river kilometer 14, the river passes the small town of Uchiza on the left bank of the river . Finally, the Río Chontayacu flows into the Río Huallaga 28 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Tocache at an altitude of about 496  m .

Catchment area

The Río Chontayacu drains an area of ​​about 2350 km². In the south the catchment area of the Río Chontayacu borders on that of the Río Yanajanca , in the west on that of the Río Marañón and in the north on the catchment area of ​​the Río Tocache .
